4784 feet, Georgia Highpoint
March 2008
Laurie and I took a trip to Helen, GA while my mom watched the girls. While looking at a local map for nearby hikes I noticed that Brasstown Bald was only 20 miles away. Laurie and I headed over to take the easy opportunity to bag a state highpoint. We tried to park near the bottom to take the 3 or 4 mile, maybe 2000 foot hike up, but soon found ourselves in the upper parking lot. Since the only cheesier thing than driving to the top was driving to the top then driving back to the bottom to hike up (and we still didn't know where a trail started) we went ahead and took the 15 minute, 6/10 of a mile hike up the last five or six-hundred feet to the observation tower (which was closed). It was cold up top and there was ice in the shade, but the view was nice. Three down, forty-seven to go...
